At the beginning of 2012 and with the intention of backing the commitment of the Galician public administration to increase the the capacity of public school for children from 0 to 3 and with the implementation of complementary work-life balance measures, the Amancio Ortega Foundation and the Xunta de Galicia signed an agreement for the construction and equipping of eight nursery schools, with the aim of integrating them into the public network of nursery schools in Galicia.
With a general budget of 32 million euros, the nursery schools financed by the Amancio Ortega Foundation, all of them already in operation, offer a total of more than 650 newly created vacancies for children from 0 to 3 years in the towns where they are located: Ferrol, Melide, Cambre, A Coruña, Arteixo, Santiago de Compostela, Lugo and Ourense.
Two of these centres also include spaces for the care of the elderly as a pioneering intergenerational experience in Spain. Specifically, the intergenerational center of Ourense houses in the same building the nursery school and a day center for the elderly for the promotion of personal autonomy and the prevention of dependence. The Arteixo center, on the other hand, consists of a nursery school and a residence for the elderly with a day center.
