Intergenerational centres in Galicia
During the development of the Nursery Schools in Galicia project, the Amancio Ortega Foundation took the opportunity to broaden the scope of its participation in two of the nine beneficiary municipalities through a more comprehensive and pioneering type of social facility in Spain: the intergenerational centre.
Based on this decision, the design of the nursery schools planned for Arteixo and Ourense included spaces within the facilities to care for the elderly. Specifically, the intergenerational centre in Ourense houses in the same building the nursery school and a day centre for elderly people to promote personal independence and to prevent dependence. On the other hand, the centre in Arteixo is made up of a nursery school and a nursing home for elderly people with a day centre.
This initiative to create shared spaces so that children and the elderly can be together, interact and share experiences not only meets needs having to do with family life balance but also takes action on a wider concept of welfare by increasing active ageing and high-quality opportunities that the elderly receive.
